There's no Panera Bread restaurant currently in West Allis. But that could change.

A new Panera Bread is coming to West Allis, according to city plan commission documents.

Currently, there are no other Panera Bread locations in West Allis.

The restaurant is proposed for 3020 S. 108th St., on the east side of Highway 100 just north of Oklahoma Avenue, and would take over the space of a former Mattress Firm store inside the Southtown Shopping Center. Panera Bread is interested in leasing 2,500 square feet within the building.

A proposed floor plan shows 20 indoor seats for guests, as well as a carry-out service.

City staff is also encouraging Panera to include outdoor seating for dining. If outdoor dining is permitted, the restaurant will likely have to request the removal of some parking areas near the building. Outdoor dining is permitted in the area, according to the city's comprehensive plan.

The design of the restaurant will be the same as other Panera Bread locations.

The West Allis Plan Commission voted to approve the proposal April 24. Construction is planned to begin in June, with the opening date being planned for December.

Panera Bread has 2,190 locations in the U.S. and Canada, with 39 locations in Wisconsin, according to Panera Bread's official website. Currently, the closest Panera Bread locations to West Allis are in Brookfield, Wauwatosa, New Berlin, Greenfield and Milwaukee.
