Bay View church's Oktoberfest has beer, brats and more German traditions

Oktoberfest is a multinational celebration for St. Augustine of Hippo parish.

This might be the Oktoberfest we need.

St. Augustine of Hippo Parish will host its 10th annual Oktoberfest — you know, polka music, a biergarten and plates of German food — on Sept. 29. Leading the charge in cooking from a traditional rouladen with handmade spaetzle to beer-soaked brats is the festival's head cook, Stephanie Gregory, the daughter of a Japanese immigrant.

Gregory, who co-founded the one-day festival, said she learned to cook the Bavarian specialties in the kitchen of her German grandmother. She said that ethnic diversity is what "brings amazing flavor to the city."

Oktoberfest begins at noon with a traditional beer blessing sponsored by Lakefront Brewery and with free samples from the Bay View home brew club. There is a craft beer tasting from 1 to 3 p.m.

The Jeff Winard Polka Party performs from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. with a polka contest at 2 p.m. The Squeezettes take the stage at 4 p.m. and play until 7:30 p.m.
