Karen and George Herrera, owners of Sugar and Flour in Greendale, are opening a new cafe and bakery on the R1VER campus in Milwaukee's. Harbor District.

The owners of Sugar and Flour bakery and cafe are moving forward with plans to open a new cafe in the Harbor District's R1VER campus, at 2067 S. 1st St.

Casera Cafe will open at the end of July, as long as construction plans stay on track, co-owner George Herrera said.

Herrera and his wife, Karen, announced plans in October to open the cafe but hadn't chosen a name at that time.

The two wrote down a few names and settled on Casera, which is Spanish for "homemade."

"Everything will be homemade," George Herrera said.

That includes breads, desserts and the syrups used in their coffee. There also will be gluten-free and vegan options available.

Karen Herrera started the business selling cookies out of her home and on Etsy and the couple opened a brick-and-mortar location for Sugar and Flour at 5721 Broad St., Greendale, in 2017.

The new cafe in the Harbor District will take up 4,200 square feet. The atmosphere will be open, airy and polished. The Herreras plan to add plants to the space, as well as lounge seating and shared seating.

"We're looking forward to working with a new team ... and building a new community," George Herrera said.
