PASADENA, Calif. – Singer-songwriter John Legend is thrilled about the prospect of becoming a father but he and his pregnant wife, Chrissy Teigen, aren’t hitting the books overly hard before the birth of their daughter.

“We’re excited to be parents,” the Oscar-winning singer-songwriter tells USA TODAY Friday at the end of an interview about a different production, the upcoming WGN America series, Underground. He is an executive producer of the Underground Railroad drama and he produced the series theme, Heaven’s Door.

“We think about (the baby) a lot and we’re getting ready,” he says. “We don’t know that much about what we’re supposed to do, really, until it happens. We’re not reading a bunch of books about it. We just figure most of it we’ll learn from experience and receive wisdom from our friends. So, we’re just going to go into it with open hearts and minds and try to be good parents.”

John Legend and Chrissy Teigen are expecting a girl

One thing he and Teigen, a supermodel and TV personality, do have plenty of experience with is living in the public eye. They’re sharing news of the upcoming bundle of joy their way, as Teigen did when she announced the pregnancy and that they’re expecting a girl via Instagram. Legend passed along Teigen's Instagram pregnancy news via Twitter.

“We’ve tried to control the news about it and release it ourselves, basically. We announced it ourselves,” he said. “We like to control our media, because we feel like it give us the opportunity to really say it how we want to say it in the tone we want to say it.”

Presumably, that includes Teigen’s Thursday tweet pleading with people to stop sending her pictures of a so-called John Legend lookalike baby who has gotten plenty of social media attention.  .

When a reporter brings the lookalike baby situation up, Legend just laughs. “Yeah, that was funny.”

And parenthood itself? “It’ll be fun.”
