Met Gala 2019 worst-dressed: Kim and Kanye West, Harry Styles and other boring looks

The Met Gala is no ordinary fashion event, and as such, its worst-dressed list is different from the rest.

Often dubbed the Oscars of the East for its high-wattage guest list and unprecedented levels of glam, every Met Gala has a theme that attendees generally follow. Some carpet-walkers don't quite pull it off. Even worse, some don't even try.

And at Monday night's "camp"-themed gala, which asked its guests to wear bold and irreverent looks, the worst ensembles of the night were the blandest ones. On this carpet, the celebrities that opted for the usual red-carpet fashion trends faded to the background, upstaged by the attendees who actually followed the theme – and delivered eye-boggling, show-stopping looks in the process.

Read on for the least-campy celebrity looks that missed the mark.

Harry Styles

Don't worry, Styles fans, we're also disappointed that he's on this list. As one of the night's co-chairs along with Lady Gaga and Serena Williams, Styles' hand-selection by Anna Wintour to help lead the event suggested that he might walk the carpet in a gloriously over-the-top look – considering how he turned heads on his most recent tour with his bedazzled, bell-bottom suits.

But instead of going full Elton John, Styles opted for an all-black Gucci jumpsuit with a ruffled top, attached to slacks fit for a banquet waiter. His pearl drop earrings and modest heels were nice touches, but couldn't save his too-conservative look.

 Taron Egerton

Taron Egerton

If we're gonna criticize Styles for not giving us full Elton John, then we have to mention this travesty of a look from Egerton. The actor is literally playing Elton, one of pop music's most legendary purveyors of camp, in the "Rocketman" biopic due later this month. If there was ever a chance for him to prove he's worthy of the role, a camp-themed Met Gala is the obvious choice.

And yet, Egerton served up one of the least daring menswear looks on the carpet this year, simply subbing a shoelace-style bowtie for a normal one and adding a little sparkle to his Salvatore Ferragamo suit jacket. Think of the Elton-style colorful sunglasses, glimmering suits and jeweled canes Egerton could've simply borrowed from the "Rocketman" wardrobe department instead.

Karlie Kloss

Karlie Kloss

As the host of Bravo's "Project Runway," where she's presided over many fashion experiments gone wrong, Kloss should know better than anyone how to dress according to a theme and when to take risks.

"Risky" is not a word anyone would use to describe her Dapper Dan Met Gala gown. Instead of going for camp, Kloss opted for chic and leggy instead, with a gold tube dress featuring puffed black sleeves that perhaps seemed daring enough to meet the night's theme. Unfortunately, they weren't enough to elevate Kloss' dress beyond Forever 21-chic to campy couture.

Sara Sampaio

It's an unfortunate Met Gala tradition – that models' Met Gala red carpet looks are often among the more boring of the night, with the classically beautiful men and women too often opting for looks that are safe, usually sexy, and almost never on-theme.

Sampaio didn't do much to buck this trend in this August Getty Atelier gown, which might look at home at a more classic red carpet, but is a little too prom dress for any Met Gala, let alone a camp-themed one.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West

Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West

KimYe walked the red carpet as a couple, and they're appearing on this worst-dressed list as a couple.

It's difficult to say what's worse – Kim Kardashian's dress, which she described as "eight months in the making" yet didn't care to adhere to the night's theme in any way; or Kanye West's tracksuit, a look that didn't even seem 10 minutes in the making, appearing instead like he forgot his suit in Calabasas and hit up a Rag & Bone on the way to the Met.

Speaking to E!, Kardashian described the meticulous process that went into her dress, a custom Thierry Mugler creation that was inspired by a vintage picture of Sophia Loren, calling the look "California girl, stepping out of the ocean onto the red carpet, wet and dripping."

And while the gown could've been a special choice for another occasion, Kardashian blatantly ignoring the camp theme was a missed opportunity for the star, whose entire persona can be linked to the artifice and exaggerated looks characterized by the theme.

Meanwhile, Kanye wore one of the more boring red carpet looks of his career, and whether the choice was an elaborate comment on the event or just driven by laziness, it was a slight to the many men on the red carpet who actually cared to dress up Monday night.

Kris Jenner

The men and women of the Kardashian/Jenner clan are repeat offenders when it comes to not following Met Gala themes, with Kendall Jenner and several of her other sisters catching heat at the 2018 Gala for wearing sexy "naked dresses" to the Catholicism-themed event.

While the family matriarch Kris Jenner didn't opt for the naked route on the 2019 carpet, she and Styles made the same mistake of wearing mostly boring black jumpsuits to an event that should've encouraged them to take more risks, with a diamond starfish brooch that was just confusing. Jenner told E! that she was channeling David Bowie with her Met Gala look, and while her blue eyeshadow may have been a nod to his "Life on Mars" music video, she could've gone further with her daring hair and makeup look.

Shawn Mendes

Another periodically bad Met Gala trend is the insistence of many male attendees – often the ones from Hollywood, not from the fashion world – on wearing supremely boring all-black looks on the carpet, with usually only the slightest flourishes added to make them look "unique."

Shawn Mendes is one of these offenders, wearing a normal-looking Saint Laurent black suit with a little white piping, with his slicked-black hair ever-so-slightly highlighted blond. Camp aside – this is just a boring look.

Hailey Bieber

A bedazzled thong – or maybe it's part of her dress, we can't tell – does not a campy look make. Add Hailey Baldwin Bieber's name to the list of models who didn't care to take any drastic risks on the Met Gala carpet this year.

Whether she didn't want to look frumpy or ran out of ideas, Bieber's skintight pink Alexander Wang dress wasn't very campy, and worse, blended perfectly into the night's identically colored carpet. Her black hairtie was a retro touch, but again, this wasn't the time or place for simple vintage glam.
