FRANKLIN - Construction on an extension of the Oak Leaf Trail running through The Rock Sports Complex in Franklin began in late July and is anticipated to be finished by May 2018.

Once finished, a new 10-foot-wide section of asphalt trail will connect two existing parts of the trail by cutting through The Rock and adding a bicycle/pedestrian bridge across the Root River.

The new trail will start at Root River Parkway, north of the Root River, then run south toward The Rock. The trail will then wind through the sports complex, where it will eventually meet up with Old Loomis Road.

From there, the trail will follow Old Loomis Road until it meets a section of new trail that connects a cul-de-sac at the end of Old Loomis to the already existing trail at S. 68th Street and Loomis Road.

The majority of the project costs will be funded by an $860,000 Federal Transportation Alternatives Program grant, and the remaining 20 percent will be funded by matching county funds and an additional grant.

Work started late July with initial clearing, grubbing and staking.

The anticipated finish date of the project is May 24, 2018, according to Milwaukee County Parks.
