OAK CREEK - The Oak Creek Police Department alerted the public regarding a suspicious white van that has been seen in the city and that in one incident tried to get a young girl to enter.
Police say the van approached a 10-year-old girl on her bike the morning of Tuesday, Aug. 8 in the area of Melrose and Apple Creek. The driver attempted to get her to enter the van, but the girl did not.
The girl "was very brave" and biked home to report the incident, the department said on Facebook. As the girl got into the driveway, the driver — supposedly a male — yelled for her to "listen to him next time," as summarized in a press release.
A similar van was reported by Riverton Meadows Park on the east side of the city at 8:50 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10. The children who reported the van were not approached by the individuals in the van — a white male and a black male — they were only seen "looking around."
The van by the park was described to have scratched writing on the side. In the first incident, the van was only described as a full-sized, white van.
The police department is asking the community to "remain vigilant" and, if someone sees the van or other suspicious activity, to report it to the department.
Community members can call the police non-emergency line at 414-762-8200 or, if it is an emergency, 911. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 414-766-7699.
