Sen. Orrin Hatch: 'Transgender people are people and deserve the best we can do for them'

Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-UT, speaks during the the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on July 26, 2017 in Washington.

As both praise and criticism poured in for President Trump's announcement that transgender people will not be allowed to serve in the military, Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah said he supports transgender people and doesn't think "we should be discriminating against anyone."

Utah Indivisible, a local grassroots group that is a part of the Trump resistance, tweeted at the Utah congressional delegation, which is made up of Republicans.

Of them, only Hatch responded, with a simple "Yes."

In a statement provided to USA TODAY, Hatch elaborated: "I don’t think we should be discriminating against anyone. Transgender people are people, and deserve the best we can do for them. I look forward to getting much more information and clarity from our military leaders about the policy the President tweeted today."

The Utah Indivisible group rallied after Hatch's tweet. Per its Facebook page, it's calling on Utahns to contact Hatch's office to ask him to outright condemn the president's announcement.
