Jimmie Johnson passed prerace inspection, above, but his No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet failed the laser inspection platform following Sunday's race at Chicagoland Speeddway.

JOLIET, Ill. — Martin Truex Jr.'s car failed post-race inspection Sunday after winning at Chicagoland Speedway, as did 12th-place finisher Jimmie Johnson.

NASCAR said both cars failed two attempts to pass the laser inspection platform, but were ruled out of tolerance by the lowest levels. That means NASCAR will not consider their finishes to be "encumbered," which could have prevented Truex from automatically advancing to the next round of the Chase for the Sprint Cup under new rules announced last week.

Penalties will likely be announced Wednesday and consist of lost points and monetary fines for each team's crew chiefs.

That will hurt Johnson more than Truex, since the No. 78 car is already through to the next round of the Chase based on its Chicagoland victory.

Johnson, meanwhile, is currently eighth in points but a 10-point penalty would drop him into a tie for 12th.

Last week, NASCAR revised its penalty system so it could strip the privileges that come with a finish — such as automatic advancement in the Chase — if a car failed inspection by a particularly large amount.
