Alex Ovechkin on being a Russian living in Washington area: 'I'm neutral'

The Washington Capitals star forward, however, steered clear of politics when asked what it was like to be a Russian living in the Washington area amidst allegations his home country interfered in the general election that saw Trump upset Democratic challenger Hillary Clinton.

"I have a good relationship with Russians and with Americans,” Ovechkin told CNN's World Sport. “So, I'm neutral.”

Trump will be inaugurated as the 45th president of the United States at the Capitol, with opening remarks starting at 11:30 a.m. ET.

Earlier this month, a declassified intelligence report claimed Russian President Vladimir Putin commissioned a secret campaign to sway the election in Trump’s favor. Trump has questioned the report’s conclusions.

Ovechkin was was asked whether fans have treated him any differently in the wake of the news of Russia’s possible influence on U.S. politics.

"They love me and I love them," Ovechkin said.
